George H. Corliss was born in Easton, New York, June 2, 1817. After attending local schools and Castleton Academy in Vermont, he drew upon his experience as a clerk in a factory store by opening his own country store in Greenwich, New York, in 1838. In the early 1840s, however, his apparently latent talents as a mechanical inventor lead him to develop a “sewing engine” for stitching heavy leather boots and shoes.
